Bruny Island is the ultimate island experience and has a rich history. Aboriginal people inhabited the island for thousands of years before Abel Janzoon Tasman, the first European in the region partially chartered the shore in 1642. The French explorer Bruny d'Entrecasteaux after whom the island is named, visited between 1792-93. Early European settlers supported themselves with a thriving whaling and timber industry.
